First demonstration of Mobile WiMAX wave 2 functionality
Richardson, TX & San Jose, CA -- In aglobal first, Navini
Networks,
the leader in commercially deployed personal broadband wireless
networks, is
today demonstrating Smart beamforming on the Ripwave(R) MX mobile WiMAX
platform
live at the Wireless Communications Association (WCA) exhibition and
conference at the
Fairmont hotel in San Jose. |

While most vendors are
working towards delivering their first mobile
WiMAX products based on what is known as "Wave 1" mobile WiMAX
technology,
Navini Networks is already showing the critical "Wave 2" functionality
of
beamforming on its Ripwave(R) MX platform.
"Smart beamforming is the key technology in the WiMAX standard that
changes the RF game, enabling performance superior to other wireless
technologies (3G et al) and Navini has been a leader in beamforming for
several years," explains Sai Subramanian, VP, Strategic Marketing and
Product Management for Navini Networks. "Many of the largest 'personal
broadband' networks in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas already use
Navini's beamforming, which is enhancing commercial service delivery
inside
homes and offices."
With the inclusion of Smart beamforming, mobile WiMAX can deliver on
its promise of broadband connectivity anywhere, anytime .... combined
with
carrier economics that deliver a viable business case. Furthermore,
Navini
is also applying the idea of beamforming to MIMO, delivering what is
called
Smart MIMO. Navini's combination of Smart beamforming and Smart MIMO is
called "Smart WiMAX(TM)" and is an industry first.
"Beamforming and MIMO are complementary," continues Subramanian.
"Beamforming enhances the performance of both MIMO A and B and provides
crucial uplink performance that MIMO does not. Furthermore, beamforming
makes MIMO practical. Without beamforming, MIMO B performance in many
situations is suboptimal at best and non-existent at worst. Smart MIMO
takes away that uncertainty allows MIMO B to work in all situations.
From
Navini's perspective having both (beamforming and MIMO) is always
better."
The Smart beamforming demonstration also elegantly showcases the
success of Navini's Mobile WiMAX software upgrade strategy. The
Ripwave(R)
MX8 platform is exactly the same (down to the last bolt) platform as the
one that is currently deployed in hundreds of sites around the world
with
Navini's pre-mobile WiMAX software. "Our customers can rest assured that
Navini is delivering on the promise of a seamless Mobile WiMAX upgrade
as
we had previously announced," added Subramanian.
About Navini Networks:
Navini Networks is the leader in providing portable, plug-n-play
broadband wireless access solutions, with the largest commercial
deployments in the world, over 70 commercial networks in 6 continents
and
strategic partnerships with industry leaders. Navini is the only company
that has the patented Smart Beamforming technology, enabling personal
broadband for the mass market today, with a seamless upgrade to the
Mobile
WiMAX standard to deliver Smart WiMAX(TM). (Smart WiMAX(TM) is the
combination of mobile WiMAX with Smart Beamforming & beamformed MIMO).
Navini's Ripwave(R) MX portable, zero-install(TM), non-line-of-sight (NLOS)
solution consists of customer modems, base stations, and element
management
systems (EMS) that run in the full range of spectrums with softwareupgrades to the IEEE 802.16e standard.
Navini Networks is a principal member of the WiMAX Forum and the IEEE
802.16e committee. Headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
