Spirent® Communications Announces Modular Solution For Wireless Receiver Test

Spirent Communications
September 25, 2007

Spirent SR5500 Tests Mobile WiMAX and Other Next-generation Wireless Technologies

Sunnyvale, CA -- Spirent Communications plc (LSE: SPT) today announced a major new version of its SR5500 Wireless Channel Emulator, used to test wireless receivers. Successful deployment of Mobile WiMAX and other next-generation wireless networks depends on advanced techniques such as Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and beamforming. The industry expects that these methods will deliver significant gains in efficiency and data rates. Testing receivers that use these techniques is more critical and complex than ever, and requires a highly accurate emulated radio channel. The new SR5500 addresses these challenges, helping to limit deployment problems and associated revenue impact.

“To effectively test MIMO and beamforming techniques, the industry requires a very powerful wireless channel emulation engine,” said Rob VanBrunt, vice president at Spirent Communications’ wireless division. “But not all testing requires all this power. The SR5500’s building block architecture lets our customers adapt to changing testing needs. For example, a 4 x 2 MIMO system can also serve as multiple 2 x 2 MIMO systems or as multiple bi-directional test systems.”

“This flexibility offers the most cost-effective approach to meeting test requirements across wireless technologies without sacrificing performance or ease of use,” said VanBrunt. “Using this approach, building blocks can be added to permit up to 8 RF I/O ports carrying 16 digital channels, all controlled by a single user interface.”

Spirent’s SR5500 Wireless Channel Emulator is the world’s leading emulator of the wireless air interface, re-creating RF fading and noise effects for effective testing of wireless receivers. Based on decades’ worth of wireless experience, the Spirent SR5500 provides the industry’s cleanest test channel and most accurate fading. The Spirent SR5500’s advanced fading engine ensures accurate testing of sophisticated technologies like HSPA, EV-DO, E-UTRA (LTE), and WiMAX.
