WiMAX ForumTM Certifies Additional Profile for Fixed WiMAX Products

WiMAX Forum
March 23, 2006

Forum Announces Successful 3rd Plugfest in France with ETSI and Participation of 10 Equipment Suppliers

Beaverton, OR -- The WiMAX Forum today announced the latest fixed wireless broadband network products to achieve the designation of WiMAX Forum CertifiedTM based on the defined Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) system profile operating in the 3.5GHz frequency spectrum. The WiMAX Forum member companies and products to complete certification and interoperability testing include Airspan’s MacroMAX base station and EasyST subscriber station solution, Axxcelera’s ExcelMax base station, SEQUANS Communications’ SQN1010-RD subscriber station solution, Siemens’ WayMAX@vantage base station and subscriber station solutions, and Wavesat’s miniMAX subscriber station solution.

WiMAX Forum’s certification laboratory, CETECOM Spain, worked with each WiMAX equipment supplier to conduct an extensive series of stringent and extensive test procedures, consisting of protocol conformance, radio conformance and interoperability testing. To date, 14 fixed WiMAX products have received the WiMAX Forum Certified seal in the two months since the program first started certifying equipment.

“By achieving the certifications of FDD profile equipment, the WiMAX Forum and our members continue to make significant progress in delivering products that help network operators build out their fixed WiMAX networks,” said Ron Resnick, president of the WiMAX Forum. “In addition to our hard work on the certification front, I am also quite pleased with the outcome of our continued collaboration with ETSI and WiMAX system suppliers in the latest Plugfest in France, which provides essential experience and intelligence to advance how our member companies progress from the prototype stage to commercial system development stage.”

3rd WiMAX Forum Plugfest Completed
The WiMAX Forum also announced today the successful completion of the 3rd WiMAX Forum Plugfest, which was a week-long interoperability event held March 12-19 at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) headquarters in Sophia Antipolis, France. These Plugfests provide WiMAX Forum member companies – equipment vendors and network operators and their technical staffs – the opportunity to test and interwork their respective pre-certified products and equipment in advance of final testing.

There were 10 WiMAX Forum member equipment suppliers that participated in the latest Plugfest event, including Airspan Networks Inc., Axxcelera Broadband Wireless, Delta Networks, Inc., MITAC, picoChip Inc, Proxim Wireless Corporation, Redline Communications, Sequans Communications, Vcom Inc., and Wavesat Inc. In addition, Invenova Corporation contributed to the event with their protocol conformance tester.

Airspan Networks, Inc.(www.airspan.com)
“3.5 GHz, 3.5 MHz FDD certification is important to Airspan as it represents the duplex and band combination where the majority of business is,” said Eric Stonestrom, President and CEO of Airspan Networks. “The certification of our high-performance MacroMAX Base Station and our Indoor WiMAX Modem, called EasyST, provides operators the opportunity to deploy services based on Indoor, self-installed WiMAX Forum Certified™ equipment.”

Axxcelera Broadband Wireless (www.axxcelera.com)
“We are pleased to be certified for the 3.5 GHz FDD profile,” said Jamal Hamdani, CEO of Axxcelera Broadband Wireless. “We are in the process of certifying the balance of our broad portfolio of TDD and FDD Base Stations, Access Points and Subscriber products for the 3.5 GHz and 5 GHz brands.”

SEQUANS Communications (www.sequans.com)
“Sequans is proud to now have reference designs certified in TDD and FDD,” said Bertrand Debray, VP Engineering at Sequans Communications. “We will continue to support the standards and certification effort with our upcoming IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX solutions.”

Wavesat (www.wavesat.com)
"We are delighted that Wavesat’s miniMAX CPE design is among the first to achieve certification for the 3.5GHz FDD profile. Our product is now fully certified for both TDD and FDD profiles,” said Frank Draper, vice president of sales at Wavesat. "By successfully achieving certification, we enable our partners to go to market faster with low-cost and high-quality WiMAX CPEs"
