BelAir’s Wireless Event news includes:
- Islington ‘Technology Mile’
Expansion - London’s biggest wireless broadband hot zone, has expanded
to cover four kilometers making it the largest in the UK. The London
Borough of Islington hosts the “Technology Mile”, built on wireless
mesh networking equipment from BelAir Networks with partner, Cityspace.
Cityspace is a leading provider of wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) hotzones
which deliver a cloud of coverage over city centres, to the benefit of
citizens and organisations primarily in the public sector.
- The growth of the network
extends the Technology Mile a full four kilometers from the Angel
along Upper Street and Holloway Road to the Odeon Cinema. This
structure creates 'canyons of coverage' where BelAir wireless access
nodes are located on lampposts below the height of the buildings on
either side of the street.
- Usage figures are escalating
with more than 1,000 users per week accessing local information and
the Internet. In parallel, applications are already being explored by
mobile workers and local businesses; one independent drycleaners has
installed wireless CCTV to provide high quality, low cost security.
- Kent Fastrack Wireless
Backhaul Solution - Also in partnership with Cityspace, BelAir
wireless mesh nodes are providing carrier-grade backhaul to enable the
delivery of travel information and interactive services to 16 shelters
and two Smart Columns in the first phase of the Fastrack launch.
Fastrack is the recently announced rapid transit public transport
system in Kent Thameside, funded by Kent County Council, the
Department of Transport and the ODPM.
BelAir also recently announced
the deployment of its equipment in Toronto Hydro Telecom’s wireless
network in Toronto, Canada which will be the largest Wi-Fi zone in
Canada. The agreement with Toronto Hydro Telecom and Siemens includes
the use of a mesh Wi-Fi network that will provide coverage for an area
of up to ten square kilometres and it is anticipated that it will be
fully deployed in downtown Toronto by year-end 2006. End-users will be
able to access the Internet from wireless-enabled laptop computers,
mobile headsets and other mobile devices, or simply place VoIP phone
calls.
BelAir Networks offers the industry’s only third generation wireless
mesh network solution able to support multiple voice, video and data
applications concurrently. The company’s live demonstrations at the show
will include:
- Wireless broadband data
delivery with two Xbox 360™ next generation gaming consoles to
showcase the speed of data transfer over a BelAir wireless mesh
network
- A VoIP demonstration
highlighting the commercial quality of voice support over a BelAir
network
- A CCTV video application
linking into a Cityspace Smart Terminal for a remote traffic
monitoring demonstration. The demonstration will monitor foot traffic
at the Wireless Event using BelAir’s wireless access nodes and
Cityspace’s Smart Terminal. Smart Terminal is a brand new Cityspace
product designed to provide the public with free access to real-time
and journey planning services in busy, high profile locations.
- BelAir is also the sponsor of
the ‘Wireless Cities and WiMAX Conference’, a series of panel
discussions on May 17th. During this conference, BelAir will
participate in three speaking sessions on topics including ‘WiMAX
versus HSDPA versus Wi-Fi’, ‘Future-proofing Metro Wireless Networks
with a Multi-Service Architecture’ and a Q&A on the ‘WiMAX Operator
Business Case’.
- BelAir is also sponsoring the
Service Provider Award at this year’s WBI Award dinner.
