New WiMAX Forum Members

WiMAX Forum Boasts Three New Heavy Hitters

AT&T, British Telecom and China’s ZTE are the newest board members of the WiMAX Forum. AT&T will be represented by Christopher Rice, director of access technology and services; BT will be represented by Group Technology Officer Mick Reeve; and ZTE will be represented by Rajesh Bhalla, associate general manager of business development.

“China is an important market for WiMAX − both in terms of manufacturing and deployment,” says Bhalla. “As one of the first China-based companies to join the WiMAX Forum, we are working to ensure the Forum understands and meets the needs of Chinese manufacturers, operators, regulators and users.”

The Forum also developed two new groups -- an Applications Working Group (AWG) and Network Working Group (NWG) – as part of its growth process. The AWG will identify and develop requirements for high-demand applications that will both differentiate WiMAX deployments from other technologies and attract new users. As such, equipment vendors, service providers and content providers are members of this group. The NWG is working to create higher-level networking specifications for fixed, nomadic, portable and mobile WiMAX systems, beyond those defined in the IEEE 802.16 standard. Again, this group includes equipment vendors and service providers.
