WiMAX Smart Antenna

CalAmp Awarded Smart Antenna Patent For Wi-Fi And WiMAX Applications

Other Topics: WiMAX Performance Tests, Best of WiMAX World Nominations

CalAmp Corp.
August 21, 2006

Oxnard, CA -- CalAmp Corp. announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded CalAmp a new U.S. Patent titled "Wireless communications structures and methods utilizing frequency domain spatial processing" (Number 7,072,693). The patent outlines a system and method for wireless transceivers that receive and transmit signals from an array of antennas that are connected to spatial processing channels. The patent's claims cover a system to enhance the overall performance of a wireless broadband network in the presence of multipath interference.

CalAmp's smart antenna development has resulted in beamforming technology that can be leveraged to enhance the performance and coverage of wireless networks such as WiFi (802.11) and WiMAX (802.16). It uses multiple antennas and digital signal processing to form an antenna pattern optimized for each network user, based on interference and other wireless channel conditions. The complex spatial processing cancels interference by utilizing high multipath, non-line-of-sight channels.

Fred Sturm, CalAmp's President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "This patent is the latest in a series of patents related to smart antenna technology awarded to CalAmp over the past few years. It expands our intellectual property portfolio and demonstrates the Company's innovation and leadership in wireless technology. Spectral efficiency and methods to improve performance in a crowded wireless spectrum and challenging RF environments are critical issues that many companies in this industry are trying to address today. CalAmp's proven and patented technology helps solve these problems."

Other patents that have previously been awarded to CalAmp include "Wireless communication structures and methods with enhanced range and performance" (Number 7,035,652) and "Spatial-temporal methods and systems for reception of non-line-of-sight communication signals" (Number 6,947,507). CalAmp's patent portfolio also includes other patents pending in the U.S. and in other countries.
