BelAir Networks Takes Leadership Role in Advancing Environmental Standards for Municipal Networks

Industry’s most comprehensive mobile broadband mesh product family now compliant with new environmental regulations in California and Europe

Kanata, Ontario -- BelAir Networks, the leading provider of mobile wireless broadband mesh network solutions, chosen for citywide deployments in Minneapolis, Toronto, and City of London, UK, today announced the company’s compliance with the European Union (EU) Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS), which restricts the use of harmful substances in new electrical and electronic equipment. The new EU directive came into force on July 1, 2006. California’s RoHS regulations will take effect on January 1, 2007.

RoHS guidelines are recognized as the new global standard for environmental regulation. In addition to the 25 countries of the EU and the state of California, RoHS regulations are slated to come into effect in both China and Korea in 2007. Argentina, Australia, Japan and the U.S. are also working on similar legislation to restrict the use of hazardous substances in electronics.

Given the key role that local governments play in driving and supporting sound environmental policies and practices for their communities and citizens, RoHS guidelines provide a solid baseline requirement for cities and counties deploying municipal networks.

“Achieving compliance with world-leading environmental regulations is a natural extension of our commitment to delivering carrier-grade products and teaming with world-class partners,” stated Jim Freeze, senior vice president, marketing and alliances, BelAir Networks. “BelAir has always built the highest quality and most cost-effective products for municipal broadband wireless networks – now we’re also taking a leadership role in supporting environmental standards.”

In addition to the Minneapolis, Toronto, and City of London deployments, BelAir Networks was also recently selected for the city of Boston’s first Wi-Fi pilot project, and by Dolphin Stadium in Miami for a broadband wireless network supporting the world’s largest wireless POS system under one roof. The company was also recently recognized with an InfoWorld 100 Award based on an innovative wireless network deployed for military housing in San Diego. BelAir Networks teams with world-class global partners, including Siemens, Lucent and Fujitsu to deploy proven, cost-effective wireless broadband mesh networks.

BelAir Networks comprehensive product portfolio, deployed in more than 200 networks worldwide, delivers high performance, cost-effective, flexible deployment options and a migration path to future technologies. Supporting Wi-Fi, WiMAX mesh, and 4.9 GHz Public Safety, the portfolio includes the flagship four-radio BelAir200 Wireless Multi-service Switch Router, the dual-radio BelAir100 Multi-service Node, the BelAir100C Multi-service Node featuring point-to-multipoint backhaul, the BelAir100S, the single-radio BelAir50C and BelAir50S, and the six-radio BelAir300 Converged Multi-service Wireless Node, all seamlessly managed by the BelAir BelView Network Management System.
