First WiMAX installations connect WiFi hotspots as part of city-wide broadband network

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, – June 26, 2006 – Redline Communications, a leading provider of standards-based wireless broadband equipment, today announced that Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecommunications service provider in Taiwan, has successfully completed the first phase of its WiMAX and Wi-Fi access network in Taiwan. The WiMAX connections have been established using Redlines’ RedMAX products - the world’s first products to receive the WiMAX Forum Certified™ mark for a complete WiMAX system.

Chunghwa Telecom is using Redline’s WiMAX Forum Certified™ RedMAX Base Station (AN-100U) and RedMAX Outdoor Subscriber Unit (SU-O) to connect multiple Wi-Fi zones in urban centers throughout Taiwan. M-Wave Technology Corporation, a Redline Certified Partner, is managing the network planning and implementation.

Prior to rolling out their network, Chunghwa Telecom conducted an exhaustive review of WiMAX products and other available technologies, including wireless mesh networks. Redline’s RedMAX family of WiMAX products proved to be the best choice for delivering the speed and performance required for a city-wide deployment, and will enable Chunghwa Telecom to easily expand their network and support more users over time.

In a typical cell radius deployment of three to ten kilometers, WiMAX Forum Certified™ systems can deliver capacity of up to 40 Mbps per channel, with a range of three to ten kilometers for fixed and portable access applications. This is enough bandwidth to simultaneously support hundreds of businesses with T-1 speed connectivity and thousands of residences with DSL speed connectivity. The RedMAX system is currently delivering WiMAX performance over line-of-sight connections of up to twelve kilometers.

“Following on the success of our WiMAX deployments with major carriers in many International markets, we once again confirm Redline’s global leadership in the deployment of WiMAX solutions for the delivery of advanced communications,” said Keith Doucet, Vice President of Product Management, Redline Communications.

Redline's RedMAX Family
Redline's RedMAX system is the first complete WiMAX system to be WiMAX Forum Certified™ for conformance to the IEEE 802.16-2004 standards for performance and interoperability. The RedMAX carrier class Base Station (AN-100U) delivers voice, video, and prioritized data traffic to the indoor and outdoor RedMAX Subscriber Units, which feature the Intel® PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband interface. The RedMAX family also includes the RedMAX SU-I indoor units, and will soon include products based on the IEEE 802.16-2005 standard for mobile WiMAX. Redline’s RedMAX solutions are designed to operate in a wide range of network designs and deployments, including point-to-point and point-to-multi-point, in urban and rural geographies.

WiMAX Technologies
WiMAX is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances. The first phase of WiMAX products can be used for a range of applications, including "last mile" broadband connections, cellular backhaul, and high-speed enterprise connectivity for businesses. As WiMAX evolves, it will deliver both fixed and mobile wireless broadband connectivity.
